Yusuf Isah, a man, was charged on Wednesday in an Upper Area Court in Karu, Abuja for allegedly attempting to steal a car from the Garki Shopping Center.
Isah was accused of trying to commit a crime by the police.
A squad of police officers assigned to Garki Division reported the incident to the FCT Area Command, according to prosecution attorney Olanrewaju Osho.
The defendant entered the parking lot of the Garki Shopping Plaza on September 14 and used a master key to open a car, according to Mr. Osho, who testified in court.
The prosecutor claimed that after the defendant relocated the car to another parking spot, he was seen by the Garki police squad and taken into custody.
The offence, he said, contravened the provision of Section 95 of the Penal Code.
He said during a police investigation, a lot of master keys were found in his possession. The defendant confessed to the crime, but pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Judge, Hassan Mohammed, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N200,000 with one surety in like sum, who must be resident within the court’s jurisdiction.
Mr Mohammed ordered that the address, National ID card or driver’s licence of the surety must be verified by an officer of the court.
He adjourned the case until November 10, for further mention.
