Three civil servants were charged with assaulting Chief Magistrate Umar Salihu-Kokani in a magistrates court in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State.
On Monday, the police made the allegations against the suspects Aliyu Shehu, Yahyah Badare, and Surajo Shehu.
The personnel of the Kebbi State Ministry of Higher Education was accused of criminal conspiracy, criminal falsehood, assault, and defamation in violation of section 373 of the Kebbi State Penal Code statute of 2021.
BK/358c/2022 was the case number.
Chief Magistrate Kokani was attacked by the three men as he was doing ablution in the mosque, according to the prosecution's attorney, Malam Jibril Abba, who testified in court.
Abba said they were arrested by the police after the plaintiff reported the matter.
The Prosecutor told the court that the police were ready to open its case, but due to the absence of the principal witness, he will be seeking an adjournment.
The civil servants were not represented by any counsel in court.
Magistrate Hassan Kwaido adjourned the case until November 28 for further mention.
Speaking to newsmen after the adjournment of the case, Counsel to the Plaintiff, Sani Dan-Yaro, explained that all his client wanted was justice.
Dan-Yaro said the action of the civil servants could send a wrong signal to the people in the larger society that anybody could be assaulted and go scot-free if a Chief Magistrate could be assaulted without consequences.
He said: “What we want is justice.
“We don’t want a situation where people would be taking the law into their hands and believing that nothing would happen.”
