According to Abdullahi Adamu, national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), it would be embarrassing for President Muhammadu Buhari to hand over control to the opposition in 2023.
But according to the party chairman, Buhari wants the APC to win more than anybody else, according to a BBC Hausa interview.
It would be wrong for Buhari to resign from his position as president over the electioneering, Adamu said in response to allegations that the president is avoiding supporting the party's presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
He said, "Everyone on our path is seeing the signals that God shows us, things are going the way we desire, and we are grateful to God. We have faith in our ability to succeed, and everyone else agrees.
Adamu responded to claims that Buhari has been skipping party rallies by saying they are baseless.
“Anyone who tells you that he wants (APC to) win this election more than Buhari is lying. My reason is that it is a shame for the president to hand over power to a political party that is not his.
“What people don’t consider is that Muhammadu Buhari is the president and there is an oath on him that every citizen belongs to him. So he has to be careful because if he doesn’t do that, his critics will accuse him of working for APC instead of working for Nigeria,” he stated.
The chairman of the APC stated that the party is unafraid of the large crowds that other political parties attract to their rallies.
“I didn’t see it, and it will not scare us because it is normal. This country has about 200 million people, and there is no place where PDP can gather a million people.
“The Waziri of Adamawa who is contesting for presidency, so far he has not been able to unite members of his party,” Adamu added.
