Festus Okoye, National Commissioner of INEC and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, made this announcement in a statement released on Wednesday in Abuja.
The attack, which occurred after those on the Orlu and Oru West LGAs and the State Headquarters in Owerri, was the fourth to occur in the state, according to Okoye.
He stated that eight windows were broken and burglary evidence was removed. The state's INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC Prof. Sylvia Agu, reported the incident in the early hours of Tuesday.
“Fortunately, the attackers could not access the building, and movable and immovable equipment and other materials were not removed or vandalised.
“However, as a precautionary measure, critical materials such as ballot boxes and voting cubicles have been evacuated to another INEC facility for safekeeping.
“Similarly, all uncollected PVCs have been secured, while security will be deployed to ensure the continuous collection of the cards by registered voters in the same premises,” he said.
Okoye revealed that the incident had been reported to the police and other security agencies for necessary action.
