Usman Alkali Baba, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), had his sentence for contempt from the Federal High Court of Abuja on November 29, 2022, vacated.
In a ruling issued on Wednesday, Justice Bolaji Olajuwon noted that there was proof before the court showing that the Inspector General of Police had mostly complied with the earlier ruling. The decree called for Patrick Okoli, a police officer forced into retirement, to be rehired.
In light of the altered situation, Justice Olajuwon stated that the IGP's request to overturn the committal decision "is worthy of sympathetic attention."
The decision to commute his sentence has been overturned since the applicant, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, demonstrated "significant compliance" with the court's directive and pledged to achieve full compliance, she said.
Justice Olajuwon found the IGP guilty on November 29 and sentenced him to three months in jail for breaching the Federal High Court's order on October 21, 2011, which restored Okoli.
The Police Council (now Police Service Commission; PSC), which asserted that it acted by Decree 17 of 1984, forced Okoli into retirement while he was serving as the Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) for the Bauchi State Command in 1992; the court overturned this decision in October 2011.
