Enugu State police have increased their efforts to capture those encouraging criminality and violence after detaining four allegedly high-profile criminals in a week.
The agents recovered one AK-47 rifle, 51 live 7.62mm bullets, three replica Beretta pistols, one imitation Pump Action pistol, the butt of a replica gun, 31 live rounds, and other evidence during the allotted period.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Daniel Ndukwe, stated in a statement issued on Thursday in Enugu that between December 1 and December 6, persons believed to be among those causing fear among the residents had been detained.
Mr Ahmed Ammani, the commissioner of police, asserted Ndukwe's explanation of the success of the current operational and anti-crime strategies.
He claimed that the commissioner had instructed police to continue purging the state of persistent offenders and asked the public to continue offering trustworthy tips.
Ifeanyi Ngene, 36, was detained by members of the Anti-Cultism Squad on December 6 at Akwuke in the Akunanaw axis of Enugu, according to the PPRO.
51 live 7.62 mm rounds, two AK-47 magazines, and an AK-47 firearm were discovered in Ngene's hands, a police official said.
Additionally, he said that Ngene had yielded two walkie-talkies, a senior police official's shirt, three black military belts, and two forest guards' black berets.
In addition, Kenechi Ngwuenwo, 25, was detained by Central Police Station personnel on December 6 at around 4.40 p.m. as they were performing a stop-and-search on the Enugu-Onitsha Road near the New Market Enugu.
One gun that had been altered to fit his size and had six fully loaded cartridges was discovered to be in his unauthorised possession.
Similarly, Amaechi Precious, 25, was apprehended and arrested on December 1 at 11:25 a.m. by Police Mobile Force-3, who were conducting an increased patrol along Ozalla-4-Corners-Udi Road. Precious was driving a Toyota Sienna commercial vehicle from Abakaliki, Ebonyi, to Awka, Anambra.
During the search, three locally made Beretta handguns, a locally-made gun's butt, and other evidence were discovered in his illegal possession.
In Anam, Anambra West Local Government Area (LGA), Anambra, SWAT personnel detained Oforzoba Amandi, 26, on December 2. He was eventually identified as the receiver of the firearms and a member of the criminal ring.
