The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency has ordered the closure of Quilox, a well-known nightclub after it was discovered that it had staged an event without having sound control permission.
The owner of the nightclub on Victoria Island's Ozumba Nbadwe Street is Shina Peller, a representative for the Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Iwajowa/Kajola Federal Constituency in Oyo State.
The enforcement action was carried out on Saturday, December 24, 2022, according to a statement released by the state government the next day. LASEPA and the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offenses Unit were involved.
The general manager of LASEPA, Dolapo Fasawe, asserts that the organisation has received concerns about the club's potential environmental effect from concerned neighbours. In some cases, these allegations have even included videos.
“To avert situations like this, we recently held a stakeholders’ conversation with the owners and chief executive officers of nightclubs in the state to address the issue of noise pollution during the festive period. The state, in its benevolence, compassionately increased the decibels to accommodate leisure and hospitality business interests.
“We urged them to apply for sound control permits to enable us to reach out and notify the host community of the intended programme and further deploy our officials to the venue for proper monitoring and prevention of excessive noise pollution,” Fasawe explained.
Fasawe also mentioned that Quilox had been invited along with other stakeholders but had declined the offer.
It should be mentioned that LASEPA closed the club due to noise and traffic complaints in December 2019.
