Ghana's health minister has declared that Ghanaian nurses will soon be relocated to the UK in exchange for monetary compensation.
A bilateral agreement between the governments of Ghana and the United Kingdom is imminent, according to Mr Kwaku Agyemang Manu.
This agreement, according to Mr Agyemang Manu, will be comparable to one with Barbados.
During the discussion of the 2023 Budget in Parliament on Monday, December 5th, he made the announcement.
“We are engaging with the government of the United Kingdom, and we are just about to sign a memorandum of the agreement after cabinet approval to begin to send nurses for training and work there and come back home after three years.
“Ghana will benefit from the little money the UK government will pass on.
“For every single nurse that goes away, when we finish the agreement, it is likely we will get over 1000 pounds to come and support the health system in Ghana.”
A further 200 Ghanaian nurses were welcomed to Barbados in March to help meet the island nation’s growing nursing need.
During a recent speech, Barbados’ Prime Minister Mia Motley thanked the federal government for aiding her country’s healthcare system.
In 2019, Ghana and Barbados struck an agreement allowing for the employment of Ghanaian nurses.
