Road accident claims 10, injures six on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

Ten people were killed and six others were injured in an accident involving a commercial bus on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Tuesday.

This was verified by Joshua Adekanye, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Sector Commander in Oyo State, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday in Ibadan.

A commercial bus with the licence plate TRK 135 ZY and a hit-and-run truck carrying a container were both engaged in the same collision that occurred at 6.30 a.m. on Tuesday in the Guru Mahajji region, according to Adekanye.

He said that while travelling overnight from Malumfashi, Katsina State, the commercial bus struck a container-carrying vehicle that was travelling against the flow of traffic.

Adekanye said that the bus struck a container and crashed into a ditch as it tried to dodge the truck, killing 10 people and injuring another six. The vehicle then fled the scene.

He stated that there were a total of 18 persons engaged in the collision, including one male toddler and 17 male adults.

“People killed in the accident are 10 male adults.

“People injured are six, including five male adults and one male child, while two adult males were unhurt,” he said.

The sector commander said that the injured persons had been taken to Ibadan Central Hospital for medical attention while the dead persons were taken to Adeoyo Hospital morgue.

He said that the police division at the tollgate area of Ibadan had taken charge of the crashed vehicle.

The sector commander called on motorists to always shun night travels and driving against traffic, saying the accident might not have happened if the bus was not traveling overnight from Katsina State.
