The Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny said Lionel Messi had won a $100 wager he had placed.
Szczesny stopped Messi's penalty attempt in La Albiceleste's 2-0 defeat on Wednesday night.
Szczesny's penalty save was crucial for Poland in the goal-difference battle with Mexico after it was determined that he had struck Messi in the face with his arm while collecting an aerial cross. The Juventus goalie was astonished by the referee's decision to award the penalty kick, though.
Makkelie decided to award the penalty only after seeing the incident on VAR. Szczesny claimed that after viewing the replay, he had bet Messi that the referee would not call the penalty.
“We spoke before the penalty, and I told would bet him €100 that he [referee] wasn’t going to give it,” Szczesny told TV2. “So I’ve lost a bet against Messi.
“I don’t know if that’s allowed at the World Cup — I’m probably going to get banned for it! But I don’t care right now.
“I’m not going to pay him either — he doesn’t care about €100. I think he has enough.”
