Before the general election, the eight candidates running for governor of Kano State will sign a peace agreement with the National Peace Committee and the Kano State Peace Committee, both of which are headed by General Abdulsalami Abubakar.
Emeritus Professor Ibrahim H. Umar and Most Reverend Bishop Dr. John Namaza Niyiring co-chaired the Kano Peace Committee to encourage peace in the state of Kano, particularly in the lead-up to and following elections (KPC).
In order to organise and coordinate the signing of the Peace Accord twice in Kano State in advance of the 2019 general elections, the Peace Committee collaborated with the National Peace Committee, according to Ambassador Ibrahim A. Waiya, head of the committee's secretariat.
The National Peace Committee's chief, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, would preside over the signing ceremony.
Waiya stated that the Kano Peace Committee (KPC) would organise a high-level stakeholders' summit in Kano to sign the peace treaty with assistance from the United Nations Office for West Africa and The Sahel in conjunction with the approaching 2023 general elections.
According to him, eight political parties will be running candidates for governor, making it possible for all parties to get together and sign the agreement.
Delegates from the following groups are anticipated to attend the programme: traditional, religious, and community leaders; security organisations; women's and youth groups; academics; renowned elder statesmen; corporate leaders; civil society; individuals with disabilities; and others.
