Five weeks before the March 11 general election, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State will nominate a new candidate for governor on February 04, 2023.
The party has scheduled a new date for a primary election for governor in the State following the passing of former candidate Prof. Uche Ikonne on January 25, 2023, at the National Hospital in Abuja.
According to a schedule provided by the PDP, the sale of nomination papers to potential candidates started on January 27 and will end on January 31.
Candidates will be interviewed the following day, according to a statement made by PDP's national publicity secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba. The application deadline has been set for February 1.
It reads, “Following the sad event of the death of our Abia State Governorship Candidate for the 2023 general elections, Prof. Uchenna Eleazar Ikonne, and pursuant to the provisions of Section 33 of the Electoral Act 2022, the National Working Committee (NWC) has released the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the conduct of a fresh Governorship Election Primary in Abia State.
“The Timetable and Schedule of Activities are as follows:
“Notice to INEC – Friday, January 27, 2023; Sale of Forms – Friday, January 27- Tuesday, January 31, 2023;
“Last day for the Submission of already purchased Forms – Wednesday, February 01, 2023;
“Screening of Aspirants – Thursday, February 02, 2023; Screening Appeal – Friday, February 03, 2023;
“State Congress (Gubernatorial Candidate Nomination)-Saturday, February 04, 2023.
“Fresh aspirants are permitted to participate in the current exercise alongside those who contested in the earlier primary.
“All Party leaders, critical stakeholders, teeming members and supporters of the PDP in Abia State are guided by this accordingly.”
