The Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, management has issued a statement denying the false information that has been making the rounds about an armed robbery and the rape of nine female students.
Chika Ene, the acting head of the information and public relations unit, made a statement on behalf of the university acknowledging that "there have been some robbery instances in the Ifite axis where the majority of off-campus students' lodging are based. However, preliminary investigations show that there was no degree of rape occurrence.
In addition to hiring a private security firm to help combat crime in the student area, the university authority added that as part of its efforts to ensure the highest level of security in the university setting, it has also held a crucial meeting with representatives of the state government and the Nigeria Police Force.
The Anambra State Police Command also responded to the popular online article by stating that it had no record of the occurrence that was being peddled and, in the same vein, urging any victims of the incident to come forward with information that would help the police launch an inquiry.
Tochukwu Ikenga, the police public relations officer, claims that the rape report is malicious, false, unconfirmed, and likely to cause conflict and bring disrepute to the state. He advises the public to disregard the report and issues a warning to those who spread false information that they will not be spared when caught.
The University Authority, the Anambra State Commissioner for Homeland Security Affairs, and the Commissioner of Police, Echeng Echeng, met in the vice chancellor's office to discuss security lapses in light of the growing unrest in the Ifite Awka axis, particularly cult-related attacks.
Currently, there is peace in the region, and people are asked to report any criminal activity to the police rather than via social media so that they may conduct an appropriate investigation and make any necessary arrests.
