A social and cultural organisation called Arewa Youth Assembly asserts that the Department of State Security (DSS) has declared war on President Muhammadu Buhari's pledge for a peaceful transfer of power in 2023 as a result of attacks on the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, and the NNPP candidate for governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf.
Its head, Mallam Kabiru Yusuf, issued a statement in which the organisation denounced the alleged human rights violations by the DSS.
Yusuf claims that recent illegal acts show that the security agency does not care about President Buhari's wishes for free and fair elections and a peaceful transfer of power.
His words were, “DSS is becoming more notorious by the day. The Department of State Security (DSS) has declared war on President Muhammadu Buhari’s promise for a peaceful transition with the attacks on Central Bank of Nigeria Governor Godwin Emefiele, Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman Yakubu Mahmoud, and Kano State NNPP Gubernatorial Candidate Abba Yusuf.
“President Muhammadu Buhari has at different fora reiterated his resolve to peacefully hand over to his successor. The president has also warned security agencies to be apolitical and avoid being used by unscrupulous politicians who are after their own selfish gains. However, with few days to the elections, this advice is not being heeded to by security agencies, particularly the DSS. They constantly abuse their power and undermine President Muhammadu Buhari’s promise of a free and fair election.”
