The Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) has resumed train services on the Kaduna-Abuja route, four days after the company suspended operations.
The first train, carrying a few passengers, left Kaduna's Rigasa train station for Abuja at 7 a.m. on Tuesday.
Following the derailment of an Abuja bound train at Kubwa in the nation's Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on the same day, the NRC suspended operations on the Kaduna-Abuja route on Friday.
Some passengers who expressed relief at the resumption of train services said the suspension disrupted their lives for a few days.
They however appealed to the management of NRC to put all the necessary measures in place to forestall a future occurrence of the train derailment or any other security breach.
One passenger, Mahmood Bala, told Channels Television that the resumed services were commendable.
“It’s good but the truth of the matter is that the government should be conscious about the security of not only the passengers but the security situation of the country.
“The government should take enough measures in providing safety and security,” he said.
Another commuter, Ayuba Mohammed, bemoaned the negative impact of the derailment of the train, saying, “Definitely, it would have destabilised a lot of programmes or businesses for a lot of people.
“One is happy that it has resumed, [but] the government should be conscious about [passengers’] safety and stop things like that from happening. It disrupts a lot of things you would have planned because you are probably used to going with the train.”
