According to INEC, it is now looking into the viral video of extortion that occurred in the collection of permanent voter cards in Enugu State's Enugu East Local Government Area (PVCs).
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Enugu, Mr Rex Achumie, Head of the Department of Voter Education and Publicity in the Enugu State division of INEC, said this.
In the video, a woman was seen demanding N1,000 from each registrant who wanted to pick up their PVCs.
She claimed in the video that the N1,000 would pay for her transportation costs and other stressors associated with delivering the cards to a neighbourhood primary school in the local government region.
The woman in question, according to Achumie, is not an INEC employee or ad hoc staff member.
None of the individuals in the video, in his opinion, work for INEC.
“INEC wants to unravel how the cards got into the hands of the unscrupulous woman in the first place.
“We are looking at getting the Electoral Officer in charge of the area to liaise with his staff to know who actually gave the woman the cards,’’ he said.
Achumie assured that INEC would get a clearer picture of the whole episode by Tuesday as well as “where and whom the woman in question is working for’’. (NAN)
