Ikoko Andy, a 31-year-old man, was charged on Tuesday in a Dei-Dei Grade I Area Court in Abuja for selling and installing a defective prepaid metre for a customer for the sum of N78,000.
Andy, who lives in Byazhin, Abuja, is accused of cheating and criminal breach of trust on two counts.
Olamide Alakija, the complainant, reported the incident to the Police Divisional Headquarters Byazhin on January 4 according to the prosecution's attorney, Chinedu Ogale, who testified in court.
Ogale stated that the complainant claimed to have given the defendant the sum of N78,000 for the procurement and installation of a prepaid metre at some point in October 2022.
The prosecutor further claimed that when the plaintiff attempted to replenish the metre following installation, she discovered that it was defective.
Ogale added that the defendant refused to give the complainant her money back after she returned the metre and demanded it.
He claimed that the offence was against Sections 312 and 322 of the Penal Code.
But the accused entered a not guilty plea to the accusation.
The defendant was granted bail by Judge Saminu Suleiman in the amount of N100,000 with one surety in the same amount.
The case was postponed until a hearing on February 23 by Suleiman. (NAN)
