The African Action Congress' presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has asserted that the party's establishment and leadership are driven by youth.
In Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, during Sowore's appearance on Impact Radio on Wednesday, this topic was covered.
He said, “AAC has no youth leader because it was created and dominated by the youths. He said the youths have always been at the frontline of political activities in Nigeria. The youths fought for independence and won. They also fought for democracy and won.”
He suggested that other political parties do the same and promote young people to leadership roles.
When asked about the country’s issues, he said there were two types: institutional and foundational.
He said that a new constitution, accepted by all Nigerians, is necessary to address systemic issues.
He claimed that the military decreed the existing constitution without considering whether or not the populace desired peaceful coexistence.
“Restructuring for a lot of people depends on where they come from. Nigeria is a diverse country. It has different definitions for different people. While some people want state police, some want to control their resources; some say it’s about devolution of power, and all these are not enshrined in the constitution.
“Amending the constitution is a waste of time and resources. A constitution that is all-encompassing is what is needed,” he said in response to a question about restructuring.
Sowore, when asked about structures, remarked that the people themselves make up a political organization’s framework.
“The people form their structures and pledge allegiance to candidates from time to time as it suits their agenda. The structures on display are the transactional structures which are only used in the election period.
“That is not a structure but a stomach infrastructure. He urged the people to constitute the structure of any genuine political movement. Any structure that is not rooted in the minds of the people is not worthy to be called a structure,” he said.
