The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers claims that the state's citizens have confidence in the party because of its track record of capable leadership, completed infrastructure projects, and growth in the tourism sector.
The party's state chairman in Rivers, Desmond Akawo, made this announcement on Friday at a beach celebration in Ikuru to commemorate the Andoni Unity Festival.
According to Akawo, the PDP is prepared to further increase the state's tourism-based economy because it has become known throughout the 23 local Councils for constructing extensive infrastructure.
He claims that, much like Mr Erastus Awortu, chairman of the Andoni Local Government Area, who saw a potential economic opportunity in tourism, it is the role of local government chairmen to search within and discover substantial economic potentials.
“As a party with a direct interest in the people, we will identify with this vast investment hub in Andoni.
“The beach when harnessed will not only create employment opportunities and revenue for the state but also has the capacity of attracting International recognition whenever tourism is mentioned,” he said.
Akawo also praised the locals for working with the council chairman on multiple peace projects that have profoundly affected the council.
“We drove to Ikuru Town Beach by road courtesy of PDP. Indeed, there’s no room for other political parties in the 6,866 polling units of the state.
“I’m sure we don’t need to persuade Andoni to vote for our party and Candidate Mr Siminialayi Fubara in the forthcoming gubernatorial election because the soil texture in Andoni is PDP, the DNA of the people of Andoni is PDP,” he added.
He has previously described the tourism industry as a “money spinner,” and Awortu has urged for collaboration to help tap into that earnings.
“Tourism is a capital-intensive venture that requires more than what the local government council can afford. That is the reason we are calling on investors, operating oil companies and government,” he explained.
