Officers from the Delta State Police Command have detained three people they think are connected to rapes, kidnappings, and other internet scams via the well-known social networking site Facebook.
Yesterday in Warri, DSP Bright Edafe, the command's spokesman, made the statement to reporters.
The accused were detained on Monday, according to Edafe, who spoke with police from the Ufuoma Police Division of the Ughelli North Local Government Area.
He claimed that one of the criminals responsible for the kidnapping on December 11, 2022 was caught when a woman (whose identity he withheld) reported seeing him and submitted a police report.
The woman was allegedly held at gunpoint by the suspects. According to Edafe, while she was staying at a motel in the Iwherekpokpor neighbourhood of Ughelli North, they captured naked pictures and video of her.
According to Edafe, the victim claimed the offenders used video and nude images to blackmail her parents and demand a ransom.
The DPO Ufuoma Police Division immediately sent a team made up of police detectives and members of the Ekiugbo Community Vigilance to investigate and finally detain one Cornelius Emene after receiving this complaint.
The suspect gave us information during our initial inquiry that enabled us to capture Nelson Aghogho and Ufuoma Tunde.
Ofuoma, a different student from the School of Health and Technology in Ughelli North, was abducted, and the suspects described their method.
According to Edafe, the group's method of operation involved using Facebook to identify young girls who weren't aware of what was happening, transporting them to a hotel, giving them drugs, and gang raping them there.
He claimed that after that, the suspects kidnapped them and demanded money from their parents in order to set them free.
According to the statement, the suspects used blackmail to distribute nude photos and videos of their former victims to the victims' family.
According to Edafe, an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
