ECOWAS urged political parties and their leaders to take responsibility for the conduct of their supporters, cautioning them against any actions or statements that could potentially jeopardize the peaceful conduct of the elections. The commission highlighted the need for political leaders to actively engage with their followers, particularly on social media, to promote responsible and peaceful conduct during the electoral process.
The spread of fake news and disinformation during electoral periods has become a major challenge for many countries in the West African sub-region. False information and rumours have the potential to incite violence, cause confusion, and undermine the credibility of the electoral process. ECOWAS has taken note of this trend and is urging all stakeholders to remain vigilant and take measures to counter the spread of fake news and disinformation.
The commission has also emphasized the importance of impartial and responsible media coverage during the electoral process. It has called on media organizations to uphold the highest standards of journalistic integrity and professionalism and to report accurately and objectively on the elections.
