2023 Election: Peter Obi Beats Tinubu in Lagos

In a surprising turn of events, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi, has defeated the APC presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in Lagos, which happens to be Tinubu's home state. The victory is significant as it is uncommon for a candidate to defeat a major opposition candidate in their home state.

Although Tinubu won more local governments, Obi emerged victorious with the majority of the votes cast. All the results of the 20 local governments have been declared, and Tinubu won in 11, while Obi won in nine local governments.

Tinubu won in Agege, Apapa, Badagry, Epe, Ibeju-Lekki, Ifako-Ijaiye, Ikorodu, Lagos Island, Lagos Mainland, Surulere, and Mushin. Meanwhile, Obi won in Eti-Osa, Amuwo Odofin, Ikeja, Ajeromi-Ifelodun, Kosofe, Oshodi-Isolo, Alimosho, Ojo, and Somolu.

The final results show that Obi polled 582,664 votes while Tinubu scored 541,850. The returning officer for the state, Professor Adenike Oladiji, is expected to announce the official final results shortly.

The defeat of Tinubu, a prominent figure in Nigerian politics, by Obi has left many surprised and has raised questions about the level of support for the ruling APC in Lagos, a stronghold of the party. The results have also been seen as a potential sign of a shift in Nigerian politics, with opposition parties gaining more traction in traditionally pro-APC regions.
