A man named Hassan Ahmad has been apprehended by the Nigerian Army's 33 Artillery Brigade in Bauchi State. He was found in possession of N2 million in cash, consisting of both old and new naira notes. The funds were being transported in a black Hilux vehicle with tinted windows, and were packed in a "Ghana Must Go" bag. The suspect was handed over to the Bauchi State Office of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) for further investigation.
Ahmad has confessed that the cash was intended for a politician in Gombe State. The ICPC has not released the name of the politician in question. The funds were divided into six bundles of N1,000 notes amounting to N600,000; six bundles of N500 new notes amounting to N300,000; and old N200 naira notes amounting to N1.1 million.
The arrest comes at a time when Nigeria is experiencing a cash crunch, and the government has been urging citizens to adopt cashless transactions to curb corruption. The ICPC has stated that it is committed to tackling corruption in Nigeria, and will continue to investigate cases such as this.
