Breaking: Protests erupt in Rivers over alleged election result falsification
Protests have erupted in Rivers State due to suspicions of election result falsification by the government and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The state is now under tension as angry and wailing protesters have taken over different locations.

In Bori, Ogoniland of Rivers State, wailing women and protesting Ogoni men invaded the INEC office and complained bitterly that some political agents were seen rewriting election results with the collusion of INEC officials.

The PDP spokesman also alleged that the result sheets and other sensitive materials meant for the Presidential and National Assembly elections were missing.

At Igwuruta, Ikwerre local council, sporadic gunshots were heard as protesting youths took over and blocked the Igwuruta-Elele-Airport Road in violent protest over the alleged massive hijacking of ballot boxes in many units in the area by political thugs allegedly sponsored by the state government.

The youths believed that the ballot boxes were hijacked when it became obvious that the presidential candidate of the Labour Party was winning the race.

A victim who escaped from the scene through another route said he almost lost his life in the sudden protest which kept travellers and other passersby stranded.

The leadership of the Labour Party at the national level has called for the cancellation of last Saturday's presidential and National Assembly elections, citing heavy electoral malpractice.

One of the wailing women who took a break from weeping to answer some questions said they were crying profusely because the few results announced on Monday did not reflect their will as recorded at the unit levels.

The situation in Rivers State is dire, and urgent measures need to be taken to quell the protests and address the grievances of the protesters.

The electoral process must be transparent and credible to avoid violence and unrest, which could have adverse consequences for Nigeria's progress and future.

It is imperative that the government and INEC take swift action to address the concerns of the protesters and ensure that the electoral process is free, fair and credible.
