Collapsing 2-Storey Building Kills 3 In Rivers Communnity

On Saturday, three workers were murdered in the Aluu hamlet of Rivers when the two-story building they were working on collapsed.

In a statement released by the command on Sunday, Mr Ngene James, Head of the Disaster Management Rescue Team of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Rivers, verified the occurrence.

He claimed that as soon as the NSCDC received a distress call, the rescue crew mobilised right away to the accident scene to begin the rescue effort.

“Upon arrival at the disaster scene, we joined in the joint rescue operation by the National Emergency Management Agency and sister security agencies.

“Three labourers working at the construction site lost their lives in the accident.

“Preliminary investigation showed that the two-storey building collapsed as a result of the use of low-quality iron rods and other materials in its construction,’’ he said.

He advised property owners to be wary of desperate and quack building contractors who cared only about their pockets rather than the safety of their lives.

“We commend the Ikwerre Local Government Council for mobilising three pay loaders and logistics at the joint rescue operation.

“The site has been cordoned off to enable investigators to examine the cause of the building collapse. (NAN)
