ECOWAS Hails FG Over Preparation For 2023 Elections

The Federal Government has received praise from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for its preparations for the Nigerian elections in 2023.

The ECOWAS leaders met in an extraordinary summit this past weekend to review the state of election preparations in Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Liberia as well as the progress achieved with the transitions in Burkina Faso, Guinea, and Mali.

Under the leadership of Umaro Sissoco Embalo, President of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau and Chair of ECOWAS Authority, the meeting, which was held in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia, in conjunction with the 36th Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly, also discussed an update on the creation of a regional force against terrorism and for the restoration of constitutional order as well as a briefing on the results of the EU-ECOWAS Political Dialogue that took place

President of the Republic of Cabo Verde Jose Maria Neves, President of the Republic of Ghana Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic of Niger Mohamed Bazoum, and President of the Republic of Sierra Leone Julius Maada Bio were among those present. President Muhammadu Buhari was represented by Minister of Foreign Affairs Geoffrey Onyeama.

“The Authority commends the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for the efforts deployed so far aimed at securing a secure environment for the peaceful conduct of the general elections.

“The Heads of State and Government instruct the President of the Commission to provide the necessary technical assistance in support of the general elections through the deployment of short and long-term observation missions,” the statement read.
