Cletus is facing charges of criminal breach of trust and cheating.
The Prosecution Counsel, Stanley Nwafoaku, told the court that the complainant, Sandra Meshack, of Utako village, Abuja, reported the incident at the Utako Police Station on December 31, 2022.
Nwafoaku further alleged that on the same day, the defendant approached the complainant at Utako village, seeking her help to make an urgent call. When the complainant gave the defendant her phone, he allegedly ran away with it.
Despite efforts to recover the phone, it could not be found when the defendant was later arrested. The offence is said to contravene Sections 312 and 322 of the Penal Code.
However, Cletus pleaded not guilty to the charge, and the judge, Muhammed Wakili, granted him bail in the sum of N50,000 and a surety in like sum.
Wakili also directed that the surety must provide a passport photograph, any valid means of identification, and a BVN printout from their bank. The matter has been adjourned until March 23 for hearing.
