On the 22nd of February 2023, the presidential candidates of Nigeria's major political parties signed a historic Peace Accord in Abuja, Nigeria's capital. This historic event marks the first time in Nigeria's history that all presidential candidates have come together to sign a mutual agreement of peace. The agreement, facilitated by the National Peace Committee, was signed by the presidential candidates of the Labour Party (LP), All Progressives Congress (APC), the People's Democratic Party (PDP), the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Young Progressives Party (YPP).
Omoyele Sowore of the African Action Congress, Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, Peter Obi of the Labour Party, Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party were among the presidential candidates who attended.
The Peace Accord was signed in an effort to ensure peaceful and credible elections in Nigeria. The agreement outlines the candidates' commitment to refrain from inciting the public, to desist from causing violence, and to avoid any form of intimidation or harassment of voters or electoral officers. The agreement also called on the candidates to accept the results of the election and to reject any form of interference by external forces in the electoral process.
Furthermore, the agreement also includes a commitment by all parties to remain vigilant in detecting and preventing any form of electoral fraud and to take swift, immediate and decisive action against any form of electoral malpractice.
