Yakubu urged the corps members to ensure that they have food with them when they go to their respective polling units.
This would enable them to avoid any form of inducement from strangers who may attempt to use food to drug them.
Yakubu emphasised the importance of being highly security conscious and warned that the act of accepting food from strangers during elections could be dangerous.
Yakubu also advised the corps members not to tamper with or adjust the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines if they developed technical problems.
She advised that if the machines develop any technical problems, the corps members should hand them over to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) technical officials present in the polling unit.
Mr Ateli Samson, an Assistant Director from NYSC Headquarters, Abuja, also spoke during the sensitisation programme.
He assured the corps members that efforts were made daily to ensure their safety before, during, and after the elections.
He urged the corps members not to violate any electoral law and reminded them that INEC would provide effective provisions for their feeding during the elections.
Yakubu’s advice comes amidst concerns about electoral violence and the safety of corps members during elections in Nigeria.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has also assured the corps members of their safety and security during the elections. INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, said that the commission had established an Election Situation Room (ESR) to monitor the conduct of the elections and provide timely information on developments in the field.
In the past, corps members have been victims of electoral violence, leading to the loss of lives and injuries.
In 2011, 10 corps members were killed during the post-election violence that erupted in some parts of the country. Since then, there have been calls for greater protection of corps members during elections.
The NYSC scheme was established in 1973 to foster national unity and integration in Nigeria. The scheme involves the deployment of graduates to different parts of the country to serve for a year.
During the year of service, corps members are expected to contribute to national development through community service, skills acquisition, and other forms of volunteer work.
The scheme is also meant to expose young Nigerians to different cultures and ways of life and to foster a sense of national identity and unity.
