2023 Guber polls: 8 Nigerian governors win re-election bid

Eight out of eleven governors seeking re-election have been returned to office in Nigeria's recent gubernatorial elections. In the South West, Babajide Sanwo-Olu won in Lagos, Dapo Abiodun in Ogun, and Seyi Makinde was re-elected in Oyo State. Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq was re-elected in the North Central in Kwara, while Abdullahi Sule also won in Nasarawa State. Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State was re-elected in the North East, and Governor Muhammad Inuwa won in Gombe State. Governor Mai Mala Buni also won re-election in Yobe. However, Zulum, Fintiri, and Matawalle are still in the race in their respective states.

Babagana Zulum of Borno State, Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State, and Bello Matawalle of Zamfara State are the remaining candidates. Zulum, the All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate, was leading in 22 local government areas collated so far with a difference of 348,446 votes as of Monday morning. Fintiri is leading in Adamawa with over 35,000 votes, while the APC's Aishatu Dahiru is trailing him closely. In contrast, Matawalle is battling to retain his seat. PDP's Dauda Lawal is leading the five Local Government Areas' results announced so far, putting Matawalle's re-election bid at risk.

The collation team is still awaiting the results of five of the 27 local government areas in Borno State. Zulum scored 389,213 in the 22 LGAs, while his rival, Mohammed Jajari of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), scored 40,767. Meanwhile, the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Zamfara House of Assembly have already lost their re-election bids. The results of the governorship elections in Borno, Adamawa, and Zamfara States have yet to be fully announced. The remaining results will determine whether Zulum and Fintiri will secure their re-election bids or Matawalle will lose his seat.
