The Vice President-elect urged Nigerians to come out en masse and exercise their civic responsibility in electing their leaders.
Borno State governor Babagana Umara Zulum of All Progressive Congress (APC) Borno State is seeking reelection for a second term. The governor who voted earlier expressed optimism about winning the election.
Zulum faces competition from Mohammed Jajari of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labor Party candidate, Captain Ibrahim Mshelia Kadafir (Rtd).
There have been reports of violence in some parts of the state. In an attack in Maiduguri, two people were killed by suspected Boko Haram terrorists. The incident occurred near a polling unit at Muna Primary School, in Jere Local Government Area of the state.
Also, some voters in the state complained of the late arrival of election materials at their polling units. There were also cases of malfunctioning card readers in some polling units.
Meanwhile, security operatives have been deployed across the state to ensure the safety of voters and election materials.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured that the electoral process in the state will be transparent and credible.
In a statement, INEC's National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, said: "The Commission will continue to discharge its duties in line with its constitutional and statutory mandates, and ensure that the will of the people prevails in all elections."
The electoral body also urged voters to conduct themselves peacefully and orderly while casting their votes.
The Borno State election is one of the 29 states where the gubernatorial and state House of Assembly elections occur. The other states include Akwa Ibom, Benue, Delta, Imo, Kaduna, Kano, Kwara, Lagos, Plateau, and Rivers.
In Akwa Ibom, the incumbent governor, Udom Emmanuel, of the PDP, is seeking reelection against Nsima Ekere of the APC. The state has recorded incidents of violence, including the killing of a police officer and the hijacking of election materials.
In Imo State, there were reports of vote-buying and violence in some polling units. The election is between Emeka Ihedioha of the PDP and Hope Uzodinma of the APC.
In Lagos State, the governorship race is between Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the APC and Jimi Agbaje of the PDP. There have been reports of malfunctioning card readers, late arrival of election materials, and violence in some parts of the state.
Similarly, in Rivers State, some areas have reported violence and ballot box snatching. The incumbent governor, Nyesom Wike, of the PDP, is seeking reelection against Tonye Cole of the APC.
The gubernatorial and state House of Assembly elections in Nigeria have been marred by incidents of violence, late arrival of election materials, and malfunctioning card readers. The Independent National Electoral Commission has assured Nigerians that it will ensure a free, fair, and credible electoral process.
