Chinese man denies intention to kill Nigerian girlfriend
A Chinese national, Mr Frank Geng-Quangrong, is facing trial for the alleged murder of his Nigerian girlfriend, Ummukulsum Sani, at the Kano High Court. However, Frank, 47, has reiterated his innocence, stating that he never intended to kill Ummukulsum.

During the court hearing on Thursday, Frank, who lives at Railway Quarters Kano, presented a black mobile phone Redmi, WhatsApp messages, pictures, videos of the deceased, and a certificate of compliance dated March 8.

The exhibits included the defendant's phone and WhatsApp computer-generated chats between Frank and Ummukulsum between September 13 and September 16, 2022.

Other exhibits included pictures, the receipt of the N5 million gold jewellery he bought for Ummukulsum, and a 4GB black flash drive containing videos of the deceased in his house. The video played in court showed the dead playing with a pet dog, Charlie, in Frank's house in Railway Quarters Kano.

Dan'azumi played the second video clip to the court, showing the deceased on-site at her house in Abuja and a picture of her sitting on seven bales of clothes Frank bought for their marriage.

During cross-examination by the prosecution counsel, Kano Attorney General Musa Abdullahi-Lawan, Frank was asked where he was and who sent him the video clip of the deceased. Abdullahi-Lawan questioned why Frank went to Ummukulsum's house uninvited.

Frank said, "She sent me the video herself. I did not intend to kill Ummukulsum, and I don't want to be killed. She injured me on my genitals, and I cannot show the court. It is against our Chinese culture, and I am a Muslim."

Frank explained that on the day of the alleged murder, Ummukulsum had called him on WhatsApp and told him to bring her pet dog, Charlie. After refusing to pick up his call, he texted her to reach her house. Later, her mother, Fatima Zubairu (Pw1), opened the gate, and he got in to pick Charlie up. He did not talk to the deceased mother because she did not understand English, and he did not understand the Hausa language.

Abdullahi-Lawan alleged that the defendant, on September 16, 2022, stabbed the deceased with a knife in her house at Janbulo Quarters Kano. The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge. He said the offence contravenes Section 221(b) of the Penal Code.

Justice Sanusi Ado-Ma'aji admitted the exhibits and adjourned the matter until March 29 and 30 to continue the defence and cross-examination.
