Controversies surrounding the death of Whitney Desola Adeniran, a Chrisland student, who died of electrocution during the school’s inter-house sports competition, persist days after she was laid to rest.
While the school management had initially claimed that the 12-year-old Whitney slumped and died as a result of an underlying sickness, an autopsy report confirmed that she died as a result of asphyxia and electrocution during the competition held at Agege stadium in Lagos.
The Lagos State Government has frowned upon the alleged plan by the school to exhume Whitney’s corpse for another autopsy, noting that it would oppose such a request if and when it is received.
The school has, however, exonerated itself from the demand for another autopsy, stating that it would continue to cooperate with necessary authorities throughout the investigation period.
Whitney’s parents have expressed their displeasure at the school’s handling of the case, stating that the school could have taken their daughter to other nearby hospitals instead of the government-owned Agege Central Hospital, where his daughter was pronounced dead.
Mrs Adeniran has also accused the school of not mourning her daughter and demanded that Whitney’s picture be taken down from the school’s official Instagram handle.
Whitney’s death has revived Chrisland’s history of scandals, leading to protests by concerned parents and an online petition.
In 2018, a teacher of the school, Adegboyega Adenekan, was convicted of raping a two-year-old pupil and was sentenced to 60 years in prison.
