Fire razes Kano market, mosque

A fire outbreak at the Kasuwar Rimi market in Kano on Wednesday has left no fewer than 19 shops and one mosque razed, according to a statement issued by the State Fire Service. The Public Relations Officer, Alhaji Saminu Abdullahi, confirmed that the service received a distress call from one Ahmad Tijjani at 1:46 am on Wednesday and quickly sent personnel and firefighting vehicles to the incident scene at about 01:55 a.m.

Abdullahi revealed that the inferno completely destroyed 14 permanent shops, five temporary ones, and one mosque. However, he said that no life was lost and no one was injured. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.

Meanwhile, the Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Dr Sabiu Mohammed, visited the market to assess the damage caused by the fire. He assured traders affected by the fire of the state government's support to enable them to resume their businesses as soon as possible.

Mohammed said that the state government would immediately assist the traders and affected families in alleviating their suffering. He also urged traders to always be cautious with their use of fire in the market and to always have firefighting equipment at their disposal.

The Kasuwar Rimi market is one of the largest markets in Kano and is known for its variety of goods, including textiles, food items, and household items. The market has witnessed several fire incidents, the most recent being in 2018 when over 60 shops were razed by fire.
