The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate was leading in all the 17 LGAs whose results were presented to the state returning officer. The LGAs which presented their results were Tai, Opobo Nkoro, Ghokana, Eleme, Ogu-Bolo, Ikwere, Oyigbo, Etche, Khana, Bonny, Ahoada East, Omuma, Okrika, Andoni, Abuah-Uduah, Emoha, and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni.
The PDP candidate, Governor Nyesom Wike, is seeking re-election for a second term in office. His main challenger is the candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Biokpomabo Awara, who is being backed by the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi.
There have been reports of violence and irregularities in some polling units and LGAs in the state. The Nigerian Army has also been accused of disrupting the electoral process in some areas. However, the Nigerian Army denied the allegations and accused politicians of trying to drag the military into politics.
INEC has assured the people of Rivers State and other stakeholders that it will ensure a free, fair, and credible election in the state. The Commission has urged the Electoral Officers and other officials to ensure that they adhere strictly to the guidelines and regulations for the conduct of the election.
