The Commandant of the NSCDC Enugu State Command, Mr Mohammed Dada, appealed in a statement on Friday, reminding politicians that security agencies would bring to book any individual or group of persons that might foment trouble during the elections.
Dada urged traditional rulers, town union leaders and religious leaders to use their positions to advise youths to avoid acts of brigandage as the law would take its course against any offender.
He called on parents to guide their wards against being lured into any activity that might result in lawlessness by politicians.
The commandant reminded NSCDC personnel to maintain international best practices during the elections, warning that any act contrary to this would attract disciplinary action.
He also called on voters to conduct themselves appropriately as they performed their civic responsibility by coming out en masse to cast their votes.
Dada stated that the NSCDC was assuring the electorate of adequate security before, during and after the polls, urging all critical players in the electoral process to always keep in mind the need for peaceful conduct during the elections.
He further noted that experience had shown that governorship elections often generated more heat than presidential elections and that thuggery under any guise would not be condoned.
Dada charged all NSCDC personnel to continue their usual professional conduct during the elections, pointing out that more than international best practices would be necessary.
He also warned against using minors as political thugs, stating that such actions would be severely punished.
The commandant urged the public to provide useful information to security agencies to help ensure the safety of lives and property during the elections.
He expressed optimism that the elections would be free, fair and credible, urging politicians to embrace peaceful conduct as they sought to win the people's mandate.
Dada commended security agencies for their efforts to ensure adequate security during the campaigns and urged them to remain vigilant to ensure the polls were conducted peacefully.
