Oyo guber: Makinde wins polling unit in landslide victory
Seyi Makinde, the incumbent governor of Oyo State and candidate of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2023 gubernatorial election, has won his polling unit by a landslide margin. Makinde, who voted at Ward 11, Unit 01, Abayomi area, Iwo Road, Ibadan North-East Local Council Area of the state, received 174 out of the 211 total valid votes. His closest rival, Teslim Folarin of the All Progressives Congress (APC), received only 28 votes.

Speaking to journalists after casting his vote, Makinde expressed satisfaction with the voter turnout and denied claims of volatile security situations in the state. He said, "from the security aspect, I think it has been good so far. They are saying there have been security challenges, but as you can see, there are no security challenges."

The election, which was marred by pockets of violence and voter apathy in some parts of the state, saw the deployment of heavy security personnel to ensure a peaceful process. Despite the reported incidents, the governor expressed optimism about the election's outcome and urged citizens to remain calm and law-abiding. He said, "I urge the people to come out en masse to vote and defend their votes. I urge them to be law-abiding and not to engage in any form of violence."

The Oyo governorship election has been keenly contested by candidates from major political parties, including the APC and PDP. With his impressive victory at his polling unit, Makinde has demonstrated his popularity and support among the people of Oyo State.

The governorship election is expected to be closely contested with the winner requiring a majority of the votes cast and at least 25% of the votes in two-thirds of the local government areas in the state to be declared the winner.
