Edo: Thugs disrupt election in IDPs camp, snatch ballots, BVAS
On Saturday, political thugs reportedly invaded an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Edo state, disrupting the state house of Assembly election. The incident occurred in the Uhogua community, Ovia South West local government, about 30 minutes after the election started.

According to reports, the hoodlums shot sporadically and chased voters away from the polling unit. Afterwards, they destroyed some election materials and made away with the Bimodal Voters Accreditation System (BVAS). This incident resulted in the abrupt halt of the election process in the polling unit.

The IDP camp, which serves as a shelter for thousands of people displaced by the 2019 flood disaster in the state, was also affected by the invasion. The residents were said to have fled in different directions to avoid being caught in the crossfire.

Reacting to the incident, Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki condemned the invasion and called security agencies to fish out the perpetrators of the heinous act. The governor also urged residents of the state to remain calm and law-abiding, as security agencies have been mobilized to ensure their safety.

Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has also condemned the disruption of the election process in the IDP camp. The commission stated that it was working with security agencies to ensure the arrest and prosecution of the culprits. It also assured the people of Edo state that it would do everything possible to ensure a credible and peaceful election.
