School bus accident injures children in Lagos
A school bus carrying children between the ages of one and five was involved in a serious accident in Surulere, Lagos State, on Thursday morning. The bus, registered under number KTU-465DN, hit a median barrier before overturning after colliding with a concrete structure that was holding a street light. The driver of the bus fled the scene after being injured in the accident. Fortunately, the injured children and a caregiver were quickly taken to Topaz Hospital, where they were attended to by medical staff.

According to Dr Sanusi Olatunbosun, who was on duty at Topaz Hospital, three of the seven people on the bus were seriously injured, while the remaining four had minor injuries. All of the victims were treated and discharged from the hospital after being observed for two hours. However, the school is expected to cover the medical bills for the injured.

Dr Olatunbosun advised the school to advise parents to monitor their children closely and to report any symptoms such as dizziness, drowsiness, weakness, or oversleeping. The accident caused significant traffic disruption in the area, but some youths helped to move the bus to the side of the road. Emergency management agency personnel from Lagos State also came to the scene to help manage traffic.

The incident has raised questions about the safety of school transport in Lagos State, particularly for young children. Lagos State has made efforts to improve road safety, but accidents remain a common occurrence due to factors such as poor road infrastructure and driver negligence. The Lagos State government has recently launched a campaign to enforce traffic regulations and improve driver behaviour. However, more needs to be done to protect vulnerable road users such as young children who rely on school buses to transport them to and from school.
