Teen Faces Court Over Assaulting Cops

A 19-year-old Nigerian, Uwanu Emmanuel, appeared before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday for allegedly assaulting two police officers. The defendant, whose address was not given, is facing a two-count charge of assault. The police prosecutor, Insp Akinwale Oriyomi, told the court that the defendant and others at large committed the offence at 8.30 a.m. in Ado-Ekiti.

According to Oriyomi, the defendants assaulted one Insp Adepoju Adewunmi and injured him. Additionally, the defendant and another person at large assaulted one Sgt. Duduyegbe Olatunbosun while he was performing his lawful duty. The prosecutor added that the offences contravene Sections 186 and 187(a) of the Criminal Laws of Ekiti State 2021.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges levelled against him. The Chief Magistrate, Mr Bankole Oluwasanmi, granted the defendant bail of N50,000 with one surety in like sum. The magistrate adjourned the case till April 26 for a hearing.

Assault on police officers is a severe offence punishable by law, and the authorities are taking such cases seriously. The incident highlights the need for citizens to respect and obey the laws of the land and cooperate with law enforcement officers while they perform their duties.
