According to Florence Okpe, the spokesperson of the FRSC, the truck, which was conveying cement, developed brake failure, lost control, and crashed into the shop, killing three people and injuring two.
Okpe added that the suspected causes of the accident were excessive speed, brake failure, and loss of control. The dead victims were either traders or passengers waiting for a vehicle at the bus stop. The injured victims were taken to General Hospital, Otta, for medical attention, while the corpses were deposited at the hospital morgue.
The FRSC has previously warned motorists, especially truck drivers, to adhere to speed limits and ensure their vehicles are in good condition before embarking on any journey. Despite these warnings, accidents caused by reckless driving and brake failure have been on the rise in Nigeria, leading to the loss of many lives and property.
In January, four people died in an accident involving a Dangote Cement truck, a fuel tanker, and a commercial bus along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The accident occurred after the cement truck experienced a brake failure and rammed into the other vehicles.
In February, three people were killed and several others injured after a truck lost control and rammed into a market in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.
The incidents have led to calls for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and regulations, as well as the need for the government and private companies to invest in road infrastructure and maintenance. The FRSC has also urged road users to exercise caution and report any suspicious driving activities to the authorities.
The latest accident is another tragic reminder of the need for drivers, particularly truck drivers, to obey traffic rules and regulations, ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and exercise caution while driving.
The FRSC has reiterated its commitment to ensuring road safety, calling on motorists to cooperate with the agency and other law enforcement agencies in their efforts to curb road accidents in Nigeria.
