The Sector Commander, Mr Yusuf Aliyu-Haruna, cautioned commercial drivers against excessive speeding and the use of expired tyres and advised against motorists' consumption of illicit substances. He urged passengers to support the crusade against reckless driving in Kebbi.
The tragic incidents come at a time when the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has intensified its efforts to reduce the number of road crashes in Nigeria. In February, the Corps marshalled out strategies to ensure that drivers comply with traffic regulations, particularly during the festive period.
The FRSC has advised drivers to obey traffic rules and regulations and refrain from any form of reckless driving. They have also encouraged the public to report any traffic-related offences or emergencies to their toll-free number, 122. The Corps has deployed many personnel, logistics, and equipment to ensure that road users obey traffic regulations.
Despite these efforts, road accidents remain a significant concern in Nigeria, with many lives lost every year. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has identified road accidents as the leading cause of death among young people aged 5–29 years in Africa. The WHO recommends the implementation of measures to reduce road accidents, such as the use of seatbelts, helmets, and child restraints, as well as the enforcement of speed limits and the reduction of drink-driving.
