The Vice President of the South West zone of ITPN, Otunba Ayo Olumoko, made the call during a retreat for stakeholders in the tourism sector and new members of the institute in Abeokuta.
Olumoko emphasised the critical role of tourism and hospitality in the Nigerian economy, and how the industry can contribute significantly to the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) if given adequate attention.
He further explained that ITPN developed the tourism master plan for Lagos and Ogun to attract more private investments into the tourism and hospitality industry in those states, and that the strict implementation of the master plan is essential to diversify the Nigerian economy from its dependence on oil.
Olumoko added that the institute is committed to working with the government to promote and reposition the tourism sector in Nigeria.
The retreat was attended by stakeholders in the tourism industry, including hotel owners, tour operators, and representatives of government agencies.
They discussed the challenges facing the industry, such as inadequate infrastructure, poor funding, and lack of skilled manpower. They also highlighted the potential of the industry to generate employment opportunities and contribute to the development of local communities.
Olumoko stressed the importance of collaboration between the private sector and the government to develop and promote the tourism sector. He called on the government to provide the necessary infrastructure, security, and incentives to attract private investments in the industry. He also urged the private sector to take advantage of the opportunities provided by the tourism master plan to invest in the sector and promote sustainable tourism practices.
The ITPN Vice President further explained that the institute is committed to training and capacity building for its members to enhance their professionalism and promote best practices in the industry. He encouraged stakeholders in the tourism sector to join the institute and take advantage of its training and networking opportunities.
