Jerry Springer, era-defining TV host, dies at 79
Jerry Springer, the renowned American journalist, politician, and television host, has passed away at the age of 79, according to a statement released by his friend and family spokesperson Jene Galvin to BBC News on Thursday. Ms Galvin described him as “irreplaceable” and said that Mr Springer died peacefully at his Chicago home on Thursday after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer a few months ago.

“Jerry’s ability to connect with people was at the heart of his success in everything he tried whether that was politics, broadcasting or just joking with people on the street who wanted a photo or a word,” said Ms Galvin in the statement.

Mr Springer began his career as a political campaign adviser to former American senator Robert Francis Kennedy but shifted to practising law after the lawmaker’s assassination in 1968. In 1970, he ran for Congress but failed to unseat the Republican Donald Clancy.

He is best known for his raucous TV talk shows, including the long-running Jerry Springer show, which featured guests engaging in heated arguments and physical altercations. The show became a cultural phenomenon in the 1990s and early 2000s, attracting millions of viewers worldwide.

In addition to his work as a talk show host, Mr Springer was also a television journalist and presenter, hosting shows such as America’s Got Talent and Judge Jerry. He remained a fixture in American popular culture until his death, known for his quick wit and ability to connect with people from all walks of life.

News of Mr Springer’s death was met with an outpouring of grief and tributes from fans and colleagues alike. Many shared stories of how his shows had brought them comfort during difficult times, while others praised his wit, kindness, and generosity.

“Jerry was an icon in the industry, a true legend who will be sorely missed,” said Simon Cowell, creator of America’s Got Talent, in a statement. “His contributions to television and popular culture cannot be overstated, and his legacy will live on for generations to come.”

Political figures also paid tribute to Mr Springer’s life and career, including former President Barack Obama, who praised his commitment to public service and his ability to connect with audiences.

“Jerry was a true American original, a trailblazer who broke barriers and brought people together through his humour, intelligence, and compassion,” said Mr Obama in a statement. “He will be missed by all who knew him and all who were touched by his work.”
