President Buhari says Nigerians will defend democracy
President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed confidence in Nigerians' ability to defend democracy against any perceived or real threat. Speaking to newsmen after the Eid-el-Fitr prayers in Abuja, the president acknowledged Nigerians' appreciation of the stability of democracy and their love for it.

He pointed out the message sent by the outcome of the 2023 elections, where more than ten governors failed to make it to the Senate, stating that Nigerians know the power of their votes and how to use them. The president emphasised that Nigerians will continue to vote depending on their preferences.

Mr Buhari assured that the May 29 handover date to the new administration remained sacrosanct, stating that "God willing, nothing will stop the handover." On his plans after leaving office, the president expressed his fulfilment at serving two terms of four years each and thanked God for enabling him to achieve his goals.

He also looked forward to an orderly handover, expressing his desire to return to his town and be as far away as possible from Abuja, so that the incoming president would have the time and space to take decisions without any distraction from him.

The president's remarks come at a time when there have been concerns about the state of democracy in Nigeria, with allegations of electoral malpractice and insecurity. However, the president's confidence in Nigerians' ability to defend democracy is reassuring, as democracy is a fundamental part of Nigeria's identity and must be protected at all costs.

The president's assurance that the handover date to the new administration remained sacrosanct is also significant, as it signals a commitment to a peaceful and orderly transition of power. This is crucial in a country where political transitions have been marred by violence and instability in the past.

Mr Buhari's statement that he looked forward to an orderly handover is also commendable, as it demonstrates his willingness to cooperate with the incoming administration and ensure a smooth transition. This is important for the continuity of governance and stability in the country.
