The other 40 passengers were later distributed among the remaining buses evacuating the students, while the others spent the night at the RSF checkpoint with the driver. According to Sani Aliyu, who is in Sudan, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) offered the passengers tea in the morning before they resumed their journey to Port Sudan.
The evacuation is part of a larger operation to bring home more than 1000 stranded Nigerians through the Port Sudan route after the first batch faced difficulties crossing the Egypt borders. Egyptian officials had denied the first batch of evacuees access to the country, leaving them stranded at the borders for five days.
The incident underscores the need for better maintenance of vehicles used for evacuation operations, as well as more stringent safety protocols to prevent future accidents. Fortunately, in this case, no one was harmed, and the students were able to continue their journey to safety.
