In his inaugural speech, President Tinubu emphasised that security would be his administration's top priority. He stated that prosperity and justice cannot prevail amidst insecurity and violence.
To address this challenge effectively, he pledged to reform the security doctrine and architecture, invest more in security personnel, and enhance training, equipment, pay, and firepower.
Retired State Security Service director Dennis Amachree expressed his hopes that the new administration would fulfil Nigerians' expectations.
He called for the restructuring of the policing system to enforce the rule of law, emphasising the need to train and direct the police to address societal challenges promptly.
Security consultant Ben Okezie highlighted President Tinubu's understanding of the country's security issues based on his experience as the governor of Lagos.
He emphasised that the president should assemble all high-ranking security officers and promptly remove those who are unable to deliver. Okezie suggested evaluating their performance before deciding whom to retain or dismiss, replacing underperforming officers with better-qualified individuals.
He also advocated for the approval of state police, allowing governors to handle security challenges in their respective states through local police forces.
Okezie further advised President Tinubu to increase the numerical strength of the police by doubling the annual recruitment from 10,000 to 20,000 through the involvement of governors. This move would help enhance security capabilities across the nation.
Security consultant Folorunsho Attah expressed confidence in President Tinubu's commitment to security matters, given his track record as the governor of Lagos.
Attah noted that Tinubu's success in curbing the activities of ethnic militias during his tenure as governor indicated his potential to excel as the nation's president.
As President Tinubu assumes office, the recommendations put forth by these security experts highlight the need for strategic appointments, police restructuring, and increased investment in security personnel to tackle Nigeria's security challenges effectively.
