While acknowledging the hurdles encountered during the electoral process, Ms Nwadishi urged Nigerians to focus on the positive outcomes that emerged and ensure their continuity. She stated, "United by a shared commitment to a common cause, we must tirelessly pursue a free, fair, and credible electoral process."
Ms Nwadishi highlighted the role of innovative reforms, such as the Biometric Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), in significantly strengthening the credibility and transparency of elections despite the various challenges faced. She also called for free, fair, and transparent elections during the off-season elections in Kogi, Imo, and Bayelsa states.
"We must ensure that the gains we have made in the electoral process are not disregarded as we approach the off-season elections in three states," she asserted. Ms Nwadishi emphasised the need to engage other stakeholders, including security agents, to prioritise the safety of citizens who come out to vote.
Mr Ezenwa Nwagwu, the Executive Director of Partners for Electoral Reform, also shared his perspective on the 2023 election, highlighting the significant logistics challenge posed by the cashless policy during that period. However, he commended the effectiveness of the BVAS, stating that it worked at a remarkable 98% and contributed to the smooth conduct of the voting process.
"The 2023 General Election was a watershed moment because the BVAS was a game changer. It eliminated voter identification theft," Nwagwu remarked. He further disclosed that his organisation is collaborating with the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to conduct a regional review of the 2023 election, with assessments already carried out in Kano and Enugu.
Rather than condemning the election managers, Nwagwu advocated for their recognition and appreciation for successfully conducting the election, highlighting the contrast with the 2011 election, which was postponed midway. The focus now lies in building upon the progress made and ensuring the sustained integrity of Nigeria's electoral processes.
