The incident occurred when a 50-year-old individual arrived in Vienna from the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa. Customs officials became suspicious when the passenger attempted to use the "goods to declare" exit. Upon inspection, they were taken aback by the presence of an initially overwhelming quantity of reptiles packed in three transport boxes, as stated by the ministry.
Fortunately, none of the animals discovered were considered protected species. However, their condition raised concerns, with some already displaying visible signs of poor health. To ensure their well-being, the reptiles were promptly handed over to Schönbrunn Zoo, where they could receive the necessary care and attention.
During the subsequent interrogation, the man claimed that the reptiles held no value to him. He admitted to only obtaining the geckos to use as food for his snakes, providing an explanation for their presence in his luggage.
The Ministry of Finance did not disclose the exact penalties or charges the individual would face for attempting to transport the reptiles illegally. Investigations into the matter are likely ongoing, with authorities aiming to ensure the protection of wildlife and prevent such smuggling attempts in the future.
