The DSS spokesperson, Dr Peter Afunanya, declined to comment on the development when contacted. Bawa, who is currently in the custody of the DSS in Abuja, is under investigation for alleged financial impropriety during his tenure as EFCC chairman.
The search on Bawa's home in Gwarinpa, Abuja, took place in the presence of his wife and children. His office at the EFCC Headquarters in Jabi was also searched by another team of DSS operatives, who presented a search warrant.
According to an unnamed source familiar with the operation, Bawa's close associates at the EFCC office were also questioned this week. They are being probed for allegations of mismanagement, misappropriation, and diversion of proceeds from forfeited assets sold under Bawa's watch.
However, a government source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, revealed that the DSS has yet to file charges against Bawa as the investigation is still ongoing. The DSS is reportedly gathering enough evidence to strengthen its case before proceeding.
The EFCC spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, did not respond to inquiries about the development. Prime 9ja Online had previously reported that the DSS obtained an ex parte order to extend Bawa's detention while they continue their investigation. A government source suggested that the DSS's actions were intended to discourage Bawa from filing lawsuits challenging his detention.
